Overview
The University of Hertfordshire is centred around two campuses a 20-minute walk apart in Hatfield - the original College Lane campus and the newer de Havilland campus, built on the site of the town's famous former aircraft factory. Hertfordshire's location just 20 miles from the centre of London makes it an appealing option for students who want the bright lights of the capital nearby without having to pay its extortionate rents. Four in five students come from London and the counties immediately to the north and north-east of the capital. It is one of the higher-ranked modern universities, scoring consistently well for student satisfaction. It has a diverse student body, too - Asian and black students make up around half of the domestic intake, as do students who are the first in their immediate family to go to university. The university works closely with business and industry, both in the design of its courses and the provision of work experience. Its observatory, at its Bayfordbury campus, houses one of the largest telescopes available to students in the UK, and sports facilities are excellent, too.

Paying the bills
Means-tested support is being expanded to include more students from this month. The value of the University of Hertfordshire undergraduate bursary (paid in the first year only) will drop by £500 to £1,000, which will be paid to all students from homes with an income of £30,000 or less, up from £25,000 last year. The rise in the eligibility threshold, coupled with the removal of the requirement for home addresses to be in a postcode with a low level of participation in higher education, should see many more students qualify for support. Bursaries of £1,800, paid in all years of study, are available for care leavers and those estranged from their families. Carers under the age of 26 get an award worth £500 a year. There are a number of non-means-tested scholarships worth around £1,000 to £3,000 over the course of a degree which are paid to top-performing students, some of them subject-specific. The university made more than £1m worth of hardship payments in 2022-23. There are 4,700 places available in university accommodation, 다파벳 with prices ranging from £5,336 for 42 weeks to £12,635 for a 50-week contract.

/>Hertfordshire has introduced contextual offers for the first time this year, which should only add to its excellent track record of admitting students from non-traditional backgrounds. It calculates that 71% of its home undergraduates tick one or more widening-participation boxes, such as coming from a low-income background, being a first-generation student, being an ethnic minority and having a disability. Students will qualify for a reduction of 8 Ucas tariff points in their offer (equivalent to one A-level grade) if they live in the 20% of postcodes from which progression to higher education is at its lowest levels, or attend a school listed on Hertfordshire's contextual offer school list (again, those with low rates of progression to university). Widening-participation students are well supported through their transition to university and onwards, with bespoke careers advice and targeted bursary support, alongside priority access to the Turing study abroad programme and the student opportunity fund. Hertfordshire's student wellbeing team are the main contact point for those experiencing difficulties with mental health or other problems. A team of mental health advisers support students by arranging study adjustments, practical help, joint meetings with academic schools and links to external services when needed. They are complemented by Residence Life staff, who offer support, advice and a programme of events in student halls, where undergraduates can also receive peer support from resident assistants.
